Thruxton Race Review

Joy Ryder - Tuesday 22.04.08, 13:12pm

It was such a strong start to this years Bennetts British Superbike Championship at the Thruxton circuit that it looks like it’s going to be a fantastic season in motorbike racing.

There were plenty of thrills and spills at the Hampshire track last weekend but thankfully nobody was too badly hurt.  The crowd held their breath as Karl Harris, fell victim to a horrific crash as he was hit in the face by a flying Superbike after Tom Sykes highsided at Seagrove.  As you will see in the video, the machine was somersaulting through the air at around 120 mph when it hit Harris and sent him and his bike off into the gravel trap.  Karl was relatively unscathed, suffering only cuts and bruises to his face, knees and ankles and was seen later with his top lip covered in dressings.

Another injured rider was the Superbike rookie Adam Jenkinson, who suffered a fractured right forearm.  It seems amazing after seeing these terrifying incidents, that these were the only injuries the riders suffered.

Adam had rode well all weekend in his first season with the team and managed to secure seventh spot on the grid.  It was sad to see him with mechanical failure in race one and then to crash out in the second race, seemed particularly unfair, but I have no doubt he will be back stronger and more determined after his recovery.

It was good to see Michael Rutter back on the podium for the Northwest 2000 Ducati team after a smooth and fast race from the rider.  ‘Blade’ as he is know in the paddock was very emotional after the race showing just how much it meant to him to be back on form.

The next round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship is at Oulton Park on May 3/4/5th.
