Tom Grant, the former Virgin Yamaha R6 Cup Champion, will be replacing the injured Adam Jenkinson at the Oulton Park race.
Adam Jenkinson, broke his wrist in race two at the Thruxton round of the British Superbike Championship, leaving him out for at least a month.
Grant, was last year a front runner for the Rob McElnea backed squad and had a deal with the European 600 Superstock for Triumph, but it fell through at the last minute which left him without a ride for the season.
At the Thruxton race, Grant was riding for the Rob Mac Proride team in the British Supersport Championship and took a sixth place. However, the SMT British Superbike team now have a couple of races without a rider and so he has been given a “probationary” ride at Oulton.
Robin Croft, the SMT Honda Team owner, said to MCN “We’ve had a lot of interest in the ride and a lot of people have shown concern for Adam. But we wanted to continue what we have with Adam – we want to be successful with promising young riders. We haven’t got anything against the more experienced older riders, we just want to give someone else a chance.”
He added “I’ve spoken to Tom a few times now and he’s relishing the challenge. Oulton will be probationary for both Tom and the team – he’ll be checking us out and we’ll be checking him out, and if it all goes well maybe we could keep secure a deal with Tom to ride the rounds Adam will miss. Adam had his second operation and we’ve got another X-ray with Toby Branfoot, the British Superbike Doctor, on Sunday evening to see how long it’ll be before we can get Adam back on a bike – realistically I think it will be Snetterton.”
